About

Hooiberg is a 540-foot volcanic formation visible from most of Aruba's coastline, and the 600-step staircase to the top makes it the island's most accessible summit hike. The trail is self-guided and free — you show up on your own time, usually before sunrise to beat the heat and catch first light over the Caribbean. That discipline matters; there's no shade, no guide, and no company unless you bring it. The #5 ranking in Oranjestad reflects the payoff at the top: 360-degree views that stretch to Venezuela on clear mornings. The steps are steep but uniform, and the round trip takes about 45 minutes if you're reasonably fit. This is cardio, not a stroll. If you prefer someone else handling logistics or want a vehicle-based tour with shade breaks, guided operators like ABC Tours make more sense. Hooiberg rewards the opposite instinct — early alarm, solo effort, and the kind of quiet you don't get on a group itinerary.

How to decide

  • You want a free, self-guided sunrise hike with panoramic summit views
  • You prefer independent exploration over structured group tours
  • You're physically fit and looking for an early-morning cardio challenge
  • You have health concerns or want guided support during outdoor activities
  • You prefer midday adventures with shade and comfort breaks
  • You want guaranteed company and social interaction on the trail

Unlike ABC Tours Aruba and Around Aruba Tours which provide guided jeep or UTV excursions with driver support, Hooiberg is a solo climb requiring your own fitness and timing discipline. Choose guided operators like ABC Tours if you want someone else handling logistics and route planning, or tackle Hooiberg independently if sunrise solitude appeals more than organized group experiences.

Many steep stairs, our legs were jelly by the time we got down. You'd be wise to bring some water. Of the several groups we saw, 4 didn't make it all the way up. Beautiful and breezy once you summit, but it will be challenging for some folks to reach the top. Only 20% of the stair climb has a hand rail, which seemed insufficient to me.© joecE1848ZF via TripAdvisor

ABC Tours Aruba

ABC Tours Aruba operates out of Oranjestad and has held the #3 spot among outdoor activities in the capital for a reason — it's a full-day commitment. The standard safari runs seven hours, which is longer than most competitors, and covers Arikok National Park, the natural pool, caves, and a handful of beaches in one loop. That scope explains the $150 price point, which is about double what shorter half-day land tours charge elsewhere on the island. The back-to-back Travelers Choice awards and the volume of reviews point to consistent execution, and the guides get mentioned often — not just for driving, but for pacing the day so it doesn't feel like a forced march. Families book this because the private routes skip the roughest terrain and can accommodate infants, which matters if you're trying to see the interior without bounce-testing a car seat. If you're on a cruise, ABC coordinates timing around port schedules. If you'd rather spend half the day at a beach club, this isn't that.

Fofoti Tours & Transfers

Fofoti Tours & Transfers holds the #1 spot among Oranjestad outdoor activities, and the nearly 6,300 reviews at 4.9 stars back that up. This is a land-based tour — expect a four-hour ride through Aruba's rougher terrain at a moderate intensity level. The operation earned Travelers Choice for 2025, which tracks with the consensus that the guides know the island and handle groups well. Most tours in this format cover the national park side or interior desert stretches where rental sedans can't go. At around $75, it's priced in the middle of the island's UTV and safari offerings, which means it's not the budget slog but also not padded with upsells. The reviews suggest punctuality and vehicle condition are both solid. If you want off-road access without planning the logistics yourself, this is the reliable pick.

De Palm Tours

De Palm Tours runs a private beach club on the west coast near Oranjestad, and it's built around water activities — think slides, banana boats, snorkeling gear, and a roped-off swimming area. The #5 ranking among Oranjestad transportation reflects that this isn't just a shuttle service; most visitors book the half-day beach package that includes cabanas, towels, and food service. The back-to-back Travelers Choice awards suggest consistency, and the 4.8 rating across 26,000+ reviews backs that up. The setup skews family-friendly. Kids get underwater activities in shallow zones, parents get palapas with shade and beverage service. It's beach entertainment, not wilderness — no natural pools or cave hikes like the UTV tours that head into Arikok. Duration runs around four hours, which is enough for the slides and a meal without burning the whole day. Note that the flamingo interactions cost extra, and cabana rentals are mandatory with the package. If you want inland exploration, this isn't it. If you want a contained beach day with activities included, it does the job.
